Pettigrew, Petersburg, Va." which has been crossed out and forwarded to Richmond with blue pen "Free" and then forwarded back to Petersburg with Richmond Aug 22, 1862 cds and straightline "Forwarded" handstamp, most interesting letter saying, among many other things, that he was stressed by having to compose Pettigrew's obituary before the fact and "how deeply and universally your supposed loss was felt" as well as news of writer's soldier son, opinions re the North, cotton on James Island, and more, Extremely Fine, Lovely pristine use. Scott No. 6  Estimate $750 - 1,000. Pettigrew commanded the defense of Petersburg in 1863 and was mortally wounded at Falling Waters, W. Va. 17 July 1863 when they were finally in need of that obituary prematurely written. (Image1)

B 6th SC Inf Battalion and served as an infantry unit until transferred to the artillery in early 1863. The unit basically spent the war in the Charleston area assigned to the defenses of the city.
