Although this cover was dated as having reached San Francisco on Jan 18, it was not sent on City of Rio de Janeiro, which departed that port on 20 Jan, but apparently was mishandled and was not forwarded until following voyage by Gaelic, which left on 31 Jan and reached Hong Kong on 4 Mar. 2) US to Foochow, cancelled "Hamilton Minn. Jun 29 1887", with "Foochowfoo Jy 31 87" arrival cds. 3) Envelope bearing Washington 3¢ green (3) and Franklin 1c violet, obliterated by cork cancels, with adjacent "Bristol N.H. Feb 18", addressed to "Wingate, U.S. Consulate Swatow", on back: "Hong Kong Ap 7 73" transit cds, and strong, bright blue straight-line "Swatow Ap 10 73" arrival cds (Proud D2). Carried by PMSS Co. 746   imageTreaty Ports, 1880 Shanghai to Hong Kong. QV 1c green postal card cancelled bold S1 with adjacent "Shanghae a My 2 80" cds to Rev. Reusch, Basel Mission, Hong Kong, worn "S1", but appears to be Proud type K6 (value: 1,000 points), recorded used 1877-85. Shanghai cds Proud type D7, recorded 26.8.69-25.5.80, Very Fine. Estimate  $300 - 400. This usage predates Proud's earliest recorded use of this card from Shanghai (10 May 80), and is quite an early use overall, as card was only issued in Feb. 80. Inter-port mail is not common by itself, and Gurevich recorded only one earlier inter-port usage of definitive postal cards after their Feb. 1880 issue. (Image1)

747   imageTreaty Ports, 1888 Swatow to U.S. Two covers to the United States, first is 1888 cover to New Jersey and 2nd is 1902 cover to Minnesota; 1) Envelope (minor opening damage) to Asbury Park, NJ, with QV 2c carmine (printed matter rate) cancelled by light straight-line "Swatow" with JA 5 above and 88 below (Proud type D4 Swatow cds, Webb Scarcity Guide RR: five to 10 examples recorded, although several more have since been seen). Combination of this cancel and printed matter usage would justify an RR rating. Carried by Belgic from Hong Kong, 10 Jan, to San Francisco, 2 Feb 1888. 2) Envelope (opening damage at left and on flap) with QV 10c blue cancelled "Swatow Au 29 02". Addressed to St. Paul, with "St. P. Minn. / St. Anthony __ Oct 13" arrival cds, purple "Forwarded" hand-stamp, address crossed out, and Syracuse, NY address added. Webb type Fi Swatow cds tentatively allocated to British sub-post office by Proud (type D3). "Victoria Hong Kong Au 30", "San Francisco Cal Oct 3?", and "Syracuse" back-stamps, Fine. This "Paid All" is over seven years later than recorded by Winter (type 265b: 24 Jan 77 - 2 Oct 81). 2) QV 2c green and 4c carmine pair cancelled "Amoy De 1 02" (Proud type D6) to person at Savannah Electric Co., with back-stamps: "Victoria Hong Kong De 7 02", "San Francisco Cal Ja 9 1903", and "Savannah / Ga Ja 14 1903". 3) QV 2c green and KE 8c grey and violet stamps cancelled "Amoy Jy 11 03" (Proud type D6), with "San Francisco Cal Au 7 1903", and "New York Aug 11 1903" back-stamps. Two Board of Foreign Missions covers: 1) "New York Jan 15 90", with killer "2" canceling 10c brown Jefferson (Scott 209), and back-stamps: "San Francisco Cal Recd Jan 21", "Hong Kong Feb 28 90", and "Amoy Mr 2 90", carried by Oceanic from San Francisco, 2 Feb, to Hong Kong, 28 Feb, then by private steamer to Amoy. 2) "New York Aug 21", with killer "F" canceling 10c green Webster (Scot 226), and back-stamps: "San Francisco Cal F.D. Sep 5 1894", "Hong Kong Oc 4 94", and "Amoy Oc 11 94". By Belgic from San Francisco, 8 Feb, to Hong Kong, 4 Mar, then by private steamer to Amoy. 3) Preprinted piano manufacturer's advertising post card, with 1c KE cancelled "Amoy My 9 03" (allocated to Amoy sub-PO by Proud: type 1), light "Foochowfoo My 10 03" arrival cds (Proud Type D1). KE 1c stamp (SG 66 issued Feb 1903) was used over a year earlier from Amoy than recorded by Proud (4 July 04). Manila, Manila, P.I.", carried by US Navy cutter to Hong Kong, purple oval "U.S. Consulate Hong Kong", on back: "Suisun City, Cal. Rec'd Au 14 1898", Very Fine, around a dozen such usages seen. Estimate  $400 - 600. This use of Hong Kong stamps by Spanish-American War military personnel in Manila occurred only during two - three month period from Battle of Manila Bay until establishment of US military PO at Manila. 756   imageTreaty Ports, 1899 Ningpo, China Incoming Cover from Trout Creek, N.Y. Envelope with 5c dark blue Grant (Scott 291) cancelled "Trout Creek N.Y. Jul 3 1899" bulls eye duplex, with back-stamps: "Sidney Center Ny Rec'd Jul 3", "U.S. Postal Agency Shanghai Rec'd", and Chinese Post Office bilingual cds of "Shanghai 3 AuG" and "Ningpo 4 Au 99", Very Fine. Estimate  $300 - 400. Trout Creek PO established in 1847, but 2000 census recorded only 1,100 residents in Tompkins township, of which Trout Creek is a part. Although Ningpo P.O. was established in 1844, five years later there were only 19 foreign residents. Letter sent on City of Rio de Janeiro, which departed San Francisco on 6 July to Yokohama, then by Japanese mail steamer to Shanghai. Bilingual "Shanghai __ Sep 01", partially covered by one of Hong Kong stamps, demonstrating that, at least in this case, foreign postage was applied at Shanghai Chinese PO, very scarce. at originating Chinese PO, as latter was generally believed to be the case during preceding IPO tie-print era. Heuvelmans & Co. envelope with KEVII 30¢ green & black tied by oval "Registered Shanghai, B.P.O., AP 6, 07" datestamp, paying 20¢ double rate for a ½-1oz. letter, plus 10¢ registration fee, circular "R" handstamp, nearly three years later use than recorded by Proud (R3: 13.6.79-1.9.04), this example fills in gap since Proud type R8 rectangular registration handstamp is not recorded until 24 Jan 1908, manuscript "Via Siberia" routing instruction; small cover tears at top, Very Fine. Scott No. 79  Estimate $200 - 300. This is earliest known use of trans-Siberian RR for British mails, when service was restored after having been closed down since 1904, due to Russo-Japanese War. "Liege Valfurs 27 Avril 07" arrival cds confirms this cover went via Siberia, since there was a 21 day transit, very scarce, normal transiti of 30 days or so by ship. (Image1)
