3424     179c image1875, 5¢ blue, C.B.N.C. printing, grilled. O.g., lightly hinged, deep rich color, nice centering, very strong grill impression which causes a few tiny paper breaks (not mentioned on certificate since this is a normal occurrence for these grills), Very Fine and attractive, ex-Zoellner, with 1992 P.F. certificate.
Scott No. 179c; $9,500.

A RARE ORIGINAL GUM EXAMPLE OF THE 1875 5¢ CONTINENTAL BANK NOTE COMPANY ISSUE WITH GRILL.

It is thought that the Continental grills were produced as an experiment in 1876, following a stamp-cleaning court trial that reignited concerns about stamp re-use. The rare J Grills are mainly from the Worthington collection, which was sold in 1917. It is widely believed that the majority, if not all, of the examples in the possession of collectors originated from the archives of Charles F. Steel, who held the patent for the grilling machines utilized from 1867 to 1873.
