626       image(South Carolina) (Charleston) St. John's Post, 1814-63. Group of four letters endorsed per "St. John's Post" from the Mrs. Isaac Ball correspondence to Limerick, F.-V.F.
Estimate; $200 - 300.

The area along the Cooper River from near Charleston to present day Moncks Corner by 1800 had many plantations. In order to conduct their business, these planters had a definite need for mail service. Since the U.S. Government did not serve their need very well, they joined together and established a private post. The post was dubbed "St. Johns Post" taking the name from the St. Johns Parish where most of them lived.

Manuscript frank on 1838 folded letter to attorney in New Orleans, La., red "Washington D.C., Jan 12" cds with matching "Free" handstamp, letter contains note from Senator Benton regarding a law suit…Enclosed are the points six in number, on which I propose to argue the case. Several of them, and especially two last go to the merits., accompanied by printed 1838 Supreme Court plaintiff's statement of the case, Very Fine.

Thomas Hart Benton (March 14, 1782 - April 10, 1858), nicknamed "Old Bullion", was an American politician, attorney, soldier, and longtime United States Senator from Missouri. A member of the Democratic Party, he was an architect and champion of westward expansion by the United States, a cause that became known as Manifest Destiny. Benton served in the Senate from 1821 to 1851, becoming the first member of that body to serve five terms.

When the newspaper rate to most European destinations was reduced in April 1853 from 4¢ to 2¢, Spain was not included and 4¢ rate remained until early 1860. Charleston indicated that the newspaper rate was paid but did not show the amount. New York credited the U.K. with 2¢ using a red handstamp. Barcelona marked ½ real postage due using characteristic script-style handstamp.
