An album containing predominantly a WORLD WAR ONE CORRESPONDENCE between Edgar L. Rich, serving on HMAS Sydney, and his "Own darling" Ruby Wilkie, of Washington St., Toorak. In an extensive,
articulate and interesting correspondence, Rich describes his experiences on-board, largely during the period that "Sydney" was stationed in the Caribbean as part of the South American Squadron. Later, in 1916, the Sydney and the Melbourne
joined the Grand Fleet in the North Sea. A very large percentage of the envelopes still contain their original contents. (60 items). (Image

1915 naval cover to Melbourne with 1d Kangaroo tied by triangular chop, fine 'RECEIVED FROM H.M SHIP/NO CHARGE TO BE RAISED' h/s alongside the stamp, minor damage on opening. The
original letter headed "H.M.A.S. Sydney / at Bermuda W.I. / 2 January 1915" accompanies the envelope. "...I see in the morning war news Kitchener says the war will not last long now, and what he says is generally
authentic...." (2 items).
During the early stages of WW1 HMAS Sydney was involved in supporting the Australian Naval & Military Expeditionary Force and escorting the first ANZAC convoy. On 9 November 1914, she defeated the German cruiser
SMS Emden at the Battle of Cocos. During 1915 and 1916, Sydney operated on the North America and West Indies Station. (Image 1)
