476 imageCape of Good Hope: Used to Rhode Island, United States: 1809 pre-stamp double letter-sheet showing a fine strike of manuscript oval "SHIP LETTER CAPE OF GOOD HOPE" with Crown in center (Goldblatt SL1), used as a transit mark and very rare manuscript. The letter is datelined 30 April 1809 in Calcutta, India, to Providence, Rhode Island, America. The reverse is endorsed "Forward home Rio de Janeiro, March 10, 1810" and "received May 8, 1810. The front bears red "ship" in a red hand stamp., "19" in red manuscript below '6' erased as a "1/-" notation. The letter-sheet has been endorsed on the front at lower left "per ship Silvanus New York" an unusual and interesting item. very fine . Ex Huston, Dillaway.
