642 / c, entire, etc. / imageAscension: 1850 envelope with enclosed letter addressed to “Lieut. Townsend/R.N./H.M.S. Tortoise/Ascension”, seal excised, sent by Commander Thomas Miller of “HMS Ranger/20 May/1850/Whydah”, without markings and likely carried by H.M.S. “Centaur”. Whydah was the main slaving port of the Kingdom of Dahomey, controlled by the fearsome King Gezo. Attempts to bribe Gezo to cease the trade were unsuccessful and “Ranger” was deployed to intercept slaver vessels. Despite Miller’s encouragements to his friend in this letter to join in this work with its prospects of bounty payments, Townsend opted for the financial safety of remaining in Ascension until 1852.
