638 / On piece, front, etc. / imageAscension: 1831 (Sept. 30) letter to the Commissioners of HM Navy headed “Island of Ascension” written by Capt. Samuel John Payne of the Royal Marines requesting payment of the pension granted by the King for “the wounds I received on board His Majesty’s ship Amethyst in action with the French frigate La Thetis”. On Nov. 10 1808 "Amethyst" had captured the French frigate "Thétis" in the Bay of Biscay. British casualties in the engagement were severe, French losses much higher. In his subsequent report to Admiral Lord Gambier, Commander-in-Chief of the Channel Fleet, Capt. Seymour of the “Amethyst” reported losses of “nineteen killed and fifty-one wounded . . . that invaluable officer Lieutenant S. J. Payne dangerously wounded”. Payne had also been previously wounded whilst serving on the “Téméraire” at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805. This the third recorded item listed by Attwood in “Ascension: The Stamps and Postal History”, p 2. Photo. (Image1)

639 / c, entire, etc. / imageAscension: 1843 Great Britain 1d. pink postal stationery envelope from Lieutenant St. Leger Aldworth on H.M.S. “Blenheim” returning from the Cape, addressed to his wife in Ireland with enclosed three page letter headed “Saturday Sept 30th 300 miles from Plymouth” with fascinating contents regarding the rebellion on the island as “on our way called in at the island of Ascension” which “had been in a very disturbed state in fact open rebellion” with word that “a large force of marines had been sent over to quell the disturbances”, cancelled by Maltese Cross with Devonport Oct 1, London Oct. 4 and Dublin Oct. 5 backstamps in red. James Aldworth St Leger (1814-1877) had during the First Anglo-Chinese ’Opium’ War served on HMS “Blenheim”, which was now to be taken out of commission at Sheerness.
