Chalmers, Special Comm.”, with circular “6”(d) tax mark, on reverse has Fort Beaufort Mr 8 and Petersfield Ap 20 datestamps. 1877-78 the Ngika and Gealeka sections of the Xhosa took up arms against the Colonists and their allies. 2403 / c, entire, etc. / imageSouth Africa: Cape of Good Hope: 1880 (Nov.) Gun War stampless soldiers cover to near Cape Town, endorsed “On Active Service From L. Corporal G.G. Mann, D.E.O.V.R.” (Duke of Edinburgh’s own Volunteer Rifles, countersigned by “2nd. Lieutenant W.A. Curry”. On reverse has indistinct Aliwal North cancellation and Cape Town arrival datestamp. Although some Basotho with great reluctance, were willing to surrender their guns, the majority refused. Government attemps to enforce the law brought fighting by September, within months, most Basotho chiefs were in open rebellion. A peace treaty was signed with Basotho chiefs n 1881. Ex Sattin. Photo.
