cancelled by circular framed vermilion "zumi" (settled) postmark in red, and brush strokes applied vertically per each pair, thus being probably related to a postage due usage. Some tiny imperfections like minute marginal tear and wrinkles, but very
attractive and rare. (JSCA ¥900,000).(Image 1)

1871, 200 mon vermilion, plate 1, sharp impression characteristic of the early printing, vertical pair and strip of three, positions 6 / 14 and 7 / 15 / 23 respectively, together with 100 mon, plate 1, earliest
printing in dark steel-blue, position 36, all very fresh and with good margins except for position 23, which is slightly touched at base, all tied by neatly struck large "Kuwana kensazumi" handstamp to reverse of cover Kuwana, Ise province to Tokyo
with handwritten date of Meiji 4th year "6th month 11th day 9th hour dispatched" (Gregorian 28 July 1871). Alongside displaying red framed "Kuwana station / postal agency" early non-standard postmark. Cover opened for display, slightly reduced at
left and rebacked.
A very fine and spectacular colourful cover from the first rate period and featuring early printings.
Note: The 1,100 mon corresponded to the basic weight letter rate covering the distance between Kuwana and Tokyo in the first rate period, Meiji 4.3.1-4.12.4.

1871, 500 mon bluish green, plate 1, vertical pair, positions 9 / 17 and single position 20, with 48 mon dark brown, plate 1, vertical pair, positions 21 / 29, all in very fine condition with full to wide margins all around,
just the 48 mon multiple is slightly touched at lower left, tied by two strikes of large "Kanagawa Eki Kensazumi" handstamp to reverse of entire cover from Kanagawa to Futamata, Totomi province, precisely "East of Mitsuke Futamatamura" (Mitsuke was
the nearest postal station next to Futamata, which had not a postal facility). Cert. Florian Eichhorn BPP (2023).
A very rare and spectacular first-issue franking on cover, also paying a scarce "Kobin"-regulation rate during the first rate period (see note below).
Note: The postage rate of 1600 mon comprises 700 mon for the single weight carried within the basic distance, which was covered between Kanagawa and Mitsuke, with additional 700 mon corresponding to the triple rate, as any step increase over the
single weight paid half the single weight -that is to say 350 mon-, with 700 mon in this case paying twice 350 mon for the double and triple rate. The rest 200 mon were required to pay the Mitsuke-Futamata portion of the journey up to 2 ri distance
under the "Kobin" regulation (messenger from postal station to a destination without post office), 100 mon per 1 ri. These postal tariffs were applied during the first rate period, Meiji 4.3.1-4.12.4 (1871.4.29-1872.1.13).

1871, 500 mon, earliest printing in yellow green, vertical pair, plate 1 position 25 / 33, on large fragment together with block of four of 100 mon dark steel-blue, earliest printing, positions 1-2 / 9-10, both
tied by two strikes of the very rare "Large Kensazumi" with three characters in regular script ("Kaisho"), which was used in the post offices east of Atsuta and Natoya "East Zone". Alongside part of manuscript notation "...month 3rd day", which
limits the date of usage to Meiji 4.3.- or Meiji 4.4. -to be noted that the earliest recorded cover with this "Large Kensazumi" postmark dates from Meiji 4.3.13. The 500 mon in position 25 has two insect faults in upper margin which have been
improved, although the position 33 is in superb condition.; the 100 mon multiple with natural wrinkling in two stamps -mentioned for accuracy-, otherwise being very fine with exceptional margins.
Only nine covers, two cover fronts and one large fragment are recorded exhibiting this very rare postmark, with this remarkable combination franking, featuring a 500 mon earliest printing pair and a 100 mon block, most probably being unique.(Image 1)

P.O. Insect hole affecting outer margin but not altering the design.
A most unusual provincial fancy postmark, of even more desirability exhibiting this perfect strike. (JHES ¥850,000).
Note: The 500 mon plate 2 was only sold in thirteen post offices. With regards to the postmark in this lot, also one pair on piece is known, which was part of the Harold Bradshaw collection (Fine Stamp Club first auction, 1966, lot 31).(Image 1)

THE UNIQUE COVER BEARING THE RAREST 500 MON VARIETY
1871, 500 mon earliest printing in greyish yellow green, plate 1, position 3 showing the famous "Missing Stroke" and "Missing Dot" in the "Sen" character plate flaws, good to almost full vertical margin at right with three large margins in other
respects, positional pinhole at top right (type R pinhole arrangement in the plate), tied by large "Saikyo kensazumi" to folded letter sent to Tokyo, with vermilion framed datestamp "(year of) Water Monkey 8th moon 26th day / Saikyo P.O" (28
September 1872 in western calendar) below and Tokyo arrival 8.30 alongside. The cover is incomplete on front, with presumably 900 mon postage missing, as the correct franking between Saikyo and Tokyo should have been 1,400 mon according to the Meiji
4.3.1-4.12.5 (1871/1872) rates. Cert. Florian Eichhorn BPP (2023).
Only four examples of the "double error" plate flaw of position 3 are recorded, this being unique on cover. The errors of the 500 mon plate 1 were almost immediately detected and retouched, thus explaining its rarity. (JSCA 10,000,000 for a single
stamp off cover).
