S.G. #12 |
S.G. #12, 1874 "Three Pence" provisional surcharge on
1p Rose red, a handsome mint example of this important rarity, with
strong rich color, centered a bit to left as all known genuine examples are
found, all having come from a single pane of 60, large part o.g., small
h.r., actually very fine and among the best examples known; only a
lower left pane of 60 received this provisional surcharge, and of this
population there are three blocks of four known, as well as the unique
block of six, leaving only a possible 42 singles in existence, however
nearly ten used examples are thought to exist and surely there as been some
natural attrition, leaving scant few mint singles available for collectors;
signed by both H. Bloch and Stanley Gibbons, and accompanied by a 1985 RPS
certificate; ex-Prappas (Scott #11; $18,000.00). (Image) |
