1883 1p Orange revenue with black manuscript provisional "postage" overprint, the unique unused example, deep vibrant color, fresh and fine. The 1883 manuscript
"Postage" overprints are among the rarest stamps of the British Commonwealth. For years they were known as great rarities, but no one knew exactly how many were in existence. Then W. Danforth Walker, the premier collector of Grenada, did an extensive
study of these, both to determine the quantity known, and to determine which colored overprints were from which town. His research revealed less than 30 used Black manuscript overprints in existence, including one on cover. The stamp offered here has
long been known as the only unused Black manuscript overprint and is obviously a key stamp for someone trying to assemble an unused/mint collection of either Grenada or the entire British Commonwealth. An important highlight of the Sovereign
collection. Signed H. Bloch, as well as having some previous owner's handstamps on the back, plus it is accompanied by a 1969 RPS certificate; ex-Messenger (Scott #19; neither Scott nor Stanley Gibbons prices this in unused condition). (Image) |

|
1883 1p Orange revenue with red manuscript provisional "postage" overprint, the only recorded unused example, strong vibrant color, faint horizontal crease of
absolutely no importance, fine.Like its black overprint counterpart offered in the previous lot, this is the only recorded unused example of the red manuscript overprint. However, Mr. Walker's study revealed that the red overprint is far rarer
than the black overprint. His census recorded only five used examples, so together with the unused example offered here, makes a mere six total copies of the red manuscript overprint. Therefore, when a collector of mint stamps thinks they have to
"settle" for a used example, it could still be several years before even a used example is offered in the marketplace.A major British Empire rarity and certainly one of the most important items in Grenada philately. Signed H. Bloch and
accompanied by his clear 1981 Friedl certificate. ex-Melat (Scott #18; neither Scott nor Stanley Gibbons prices this in unused condition). (Image) |
