IMPERFORATE PLATING STUDY. AN EXTRAORDINARY ACHIEVEMENT IN CLASSIC PHILATELY AND THE HIGHLIGHT OF THE WAGSHAL 3-CENT COLLECTION. The unpublished article written by Mr. Waghal and posted to our website tells the story of this plating study. It
was initially completed by Dr. Chase and purchased from him by DeVere Card in the 1930's. Mr. Card is not widely known to today's philatelists but he was an exceptionally accomplished student of the 3c issues, regarded by many as even more skilled at
establishing the position of an unplated 3c stamp than Dr. Chase himself. Mr. Card spent the next 40 years studying and improving on Dr. Chase's plating, confirming all positions, replacing stamps with better examples as he came across them, and at
all times maintaining meticulous accuracy in designating the positions. Mr. Wagshal purchased the Card estate intact upon the owner's death approximately 30 years ago, and except for a few minor improvements, this study is as it was when Mr. Card
passed away. Dr. Chase succinctly summarized the condition standard to be applied to platings when he stated that, "stamps showing fine impressions, good margins and light cancellations are much easier to plate than those not in good condition."
A small fault in a stamp that does not impinge on the plating characteristics does not disqualify it from a good plating study. The architects of this study sought to meet those condition standards, and succeeded brilliantly. While some faults will
be found, nearly all stamps have a sharper than typical impression, four margins and an unobtrusive cancel. Complete 3c plate reconstructions are extremely rare. Large partly-finished studies come to market occasionally, but often these are
riddled with errors. This is an extraordinary opportunity to acquire a complete study assembled and continued over more than 70 years by three of the most noteworthy specialists of the 3c issues. Accompanied by the Wagshal article and a
