VERY FINE. THIS GRANT CAMPAIGN COVER WITH THE LINCOLN MEMORIAL STAMP -- ADDRESSED TO J. B. MOENS IN BELGIUM, ONE OF THE PIONEERING EUROPEAN STAMP DEALERS -- IS UNIQUE.

This cover was sent just eleven days after Grant was elected President in November 1868. It was addressed to J. B. Moens in Brussels and prepaid for the 15c Belgium Closed Mail rate, using the 15c Lincoln stamp. Jean-Baptiste Philippe Constant Moens was born in 1833 and started collecting postage stamps at the age of 15. He established a stamp dealership in Brussels and gained worldwide recognition as first professional philatelist. Moens published a guide for collectors in 1862, six years before this cover was mailed to him from New York. The use of the Lincoln memorial stamp on this Grant campaign envelope cannot be coincidence in this case. It was almost certainly a "philatelic souvenir" created for Moens and retained by him.

Accompanied by note from George Hargest. (Image)
