VERY FINE APPEARANCE. ONE OF ONLY TWO RECORDED BLOCKS OF FOUR OF THE 12-CENT 1861 ISSUE ON COVER. A GREAT RARITY OF THE ISSUE.

Given the duration of the 24c U.S.-G.B. treaty rate over the course of the 1861 Issue (until January 1868), one would expect to find a much greater number of covers with the double rate paid by a block of four 12c 1861 stamps. However, the reality is only two blocks on cover are recorded. This cover is especially desirable, because it was sent from the West Coast. The other is offered in lot 2095 in this sale.
