On January 26, 1861, Louisiana passed the Ordinance of Secession, and were admitted to the Confederacy at the Montgomery Convention on Feb. 4, 1861. The first shots of the war were fired at Fort Sumter on April 12, and postal relations between North and South were severed as of June 1. (Image)
