VERY FINE. A UNIQUE ESSAY OF THE ONE-CENT BUREAU ISSUE, SHOWING WHAT MAY BE THE FIRST ATTEMPT AT SKETCHING OUT THE CORNER TRIANGLE, THE DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTIC OF THE ISSUE.
We have no way of knowing for sure, but this pencil sketch of a corner triangle, which is 3.5mm high, may be one of the first attempts to add a design element that would distinguish the 1894 Bureau Issue from the earlier 1890 Issue. Other essays show the design in varying sizes in ink, but this is the only one drawn in the less permanent medium of pencil.

VERY FINE AND CHOICE. A REMARKABLE LARGE DIE ESSAY DEPICTING THE ONE-CENT AND TWO-CENT DENOMINATIONS PRINTED IN THE SAME COLOR, WITH HAND-DRAWN CORNER TRIANGLES AND WITH THE OFFICIAL APPROVAL OF THE THIRD ASSISTANT POSTMASTER GENERAL. THIS IS LIKELY UNIQUE.
Ex Brazer. Scott Catalogue also lists this essay in Dull Violet, but that does not have the corner triangles drawn in ink. (Image)
