VERY FINE. A PRISTINE MINT NEVER-HINGED EXAMPLE OF THIS POPULAR MODERN ERROR -- THE C.I.A. INVERT.

Popularly called the "C.I.A. Invert", a single pane of 100 stamps was purchased at the McLean Va. Post Office by employees of the C.I.A., for use on mail from the agency. They noticed the error, pooled together funds to buy a replacement sheet and kept the pane for themselves. When it was discovered who had purchased the stamps, a scandal ensued over who actually owned the stamps. (Image)

Photogravure booklet pane of four, Mint N.H., light gum bend in bottom pair, two tiny scuffs next to "USA" on bottom stamps, Very Fine appearance, a scarce modern error, Scott Catalog states in a footnote that part and fully imperforate stamps of this issue are proofs from the ABNCo. archives, the catalog goes on to list several varieties in the proof section, this variety is not among those listed, the 2002 Datz catalog lists this as an error (and not as printer's waste) and calls it unique, though the listing photo appears to be a different example.
