2009 Rarities of the World continued...

Later Issues (Scott 389 thru 480)
Lot Sym. Lot Description
194°   3c Deep Violet, Orangeburg Coil (389).> Choice centering with huge margins, deep rich color and proof-like impression showing every detail of the engraving, neat wavy-line machine cancel used at Orangeburg
N.Y.<><>^EXTREMELY FINE GEM. THIS IS EASIL3c Deep Violet, Orangeburg Coil (389). Choice centering with huge margins, deep rich color and proof-like impression showing every detail of the engraving, neat wavy-line machine cancel used at Orangeburg N.Y.

EXTREMELY FINE GEM. THIS IS EASILY ONE OF THE FINEST SOUND EXAMPLES OF THE 3-CENT ORANGEBURG COIL IN EXISTENCE.

Due to their use on mass mailings, many of the existing Orangeburg coils are faulty to some extent. The most common defects are corner creases or tears. Sound and well-centered copies have been recognized by collectors as truly rare, and bidding has been fierce for premium copies such as the stamp offered here.

2000 P.F. certificate no longer accompanies. With 2009 P.S.E. certificate (XF 90, SMQ $39,000.00). This is the highest grade awarded to date and only one other shares this grade. (Image)

margins<><>^EXTREMELY FINE GEM. THE2c Panama-Pacific, Lake Shade Variety (398b). Lightly hinged, intense color which is significantly different from both the listed shade and also the Carmine Lake shade, perfectly centered with wide and balanced margins

EXTREMELY FINE GEM. THE 2-CENT PANAMA-PACIFIC IN THE LAKE SHADE IS EXCEEDINGLY RARE IN ANY CONDITION -- THE STAMP OFFERED HERE, WHICH HAS BEEN GRADED SUPERB 98 BY BOTH THE P.S.E. AND THE P.F., IS PROBABLY THE FINEST IN EXISTENCE. IT IS ALSO THE FIRST EXAMPLE OF THIS RARITY WE HAVE OFFERED SINCE KEEPING COMPUTERIZED RECORDS.

According to Johl, "there is one shade that is practically as scarce as the four-cent Blue of the Columbian issue, this is known as Lake, almost the same color as were the Postage Due stamps current at that time. Only one pane of 70 is said to have been found at a Post Office in San Francisco, although it hardly seems possible that but one sheet could have been printed in this dark color. When these were discovered there were only 40 copies left, 31 were purchased by A. L. Ott, an old-time collector, and 9 by a local dealer."

With 2006 P.F. and 2005 P.S.E. certificates (both graded OGph, Superb 98, SMQ $12,000.00). This is the first example we have offered since keeping computerized records. (Image)
