VERY FINE AND CHOICE. THE 10-CENT I GRILL IS ONE OF THE RAREST OF ALL UNITED STATES STAMPS. TO DATE, ONLY ELEVEN USED EXAMPLES HAVE BEEN IDENTIFIED. THIS IS THE LISTING COPY. BY ALL RIGHTS, THIS GRILL SHOULD BE GIVEN A MAJOR CATALOGUE LISTING AND TREATED THE SAME AS ITS OTHER RARE GRILLED COUNTERPARTS FROM THE 1867-68 ISSUE.

At least two sizes of grills were used by the National Bank Note Company for the 1870 Issue. They are identified in the Scott Catalogue by a notation preceding Scott 134, which assigns them the letters H and I, but these have not been separately catalogued, as have the different grills used in 1867 and 1868 (A, B, C, D, Z, E and F). The I Grill measures from 9-11 points wide by 10-13 points tall. It is currently recorded on all values except the 12c, 24c and 30c (there are unconfirmed reports of the I Grill on the 12c and 24c). The 1c thru 7c values make up most of the population of I Grill stamps. The 10c, 15c and 90c I Grills are extremely rare and it is only in recent years that their existence was reported by Ronald Burns.

VERY FINE. A RARE UNUSED EXAMPLE OF THE 12-CENT 1870 NATIONAL GRILLED ISSUE. THIS IS THE MOST DIFFICULT DENOMINATION OF THE SET TO OBTAIN IN UNUSED CONDITION.

Aside from the 24c, which does not exist unused, the 12c is the most difficult to obtain unused, in any condition. Probably less than ten exist with original gum, and many of these have faults. The stamp here, with clear grill points, rich color, choice centering and in sound condition, is one of the finest extant.

VERY FINE APPEARANCE. AN EXTREMELY RARE AND POSSIBLY UNIQUE ESSAY GRILL ON THE 24-CENT 1870 NATIONAL BANK NOTE COMPANY STAMP. IN THE ABSENCE OF A GENUINE UNUSED EXAMPLE OF SCOTT 142 OR A "POINTS UP" ESSAY GRILL ON THIS VALUE, THE STAMP OFFERED HERE ASSUMES EVEN GREATER SIGNIFICANCE IN THE FIELD OF CLASSIC UNITED STATES PHILATELY.

This essay is believed to originate from Charles F. Steel (inventor and patent holder for grilling device) and the Earl of Crawford collection. Ronald A. Burns identifies the 3c 11 x 14 Points Down Essay Grill as coming from an early plate and printing, as opposed to the Points Up version, which he argues comes from an 1872 plate and printing ("The Early and Late States of the 'H' & 'I' Grills on the Issue of 1870 Ordinaries", Opinions VII, pp. 14-30). Extrapolating Burns' findings to the other values, the absence of a 24c Points Up Essay Grill indicates that this value was not part of the later 11 x 14 Essay Grill production. The stamp offered here was probably produced in 1870 and not deemed necessary when the later essay grills were produced. No other example is recorded, and there is no known genuine unused example of the issued 24c grilled stamp (Scott 142).

The 15c 1870 National Grilled Issue (Scott 141) is widely recognized as an extremely rare stamp in choice original-gum condition. Less well known is the fact that its ungrilled counterpart -- Scott 152 -- is comparably challenging to find in such condition.
