EXTREMELY FINE. A FLAWLESS STRIKE OF THIS EXTRAORDINARY STAMPLESS-ERA MARKING, WHICH INCORPORATES THE INITIALS OF JOHN QUINCY ADAMS DURING THE CAMPAIGN YEAR OF 1828.
The Election of 1828 was a contest between the incumbent president, John Quincy Adams, a National Republican, and Andrew Jackson, the populist Democratic challenger. The "JQA" initials in this postmark apparently reflect the postmaster's pro-Adams position. A reliable source reports that three examples are known. This is the finest and is the basis of the American Stampless Cover Catalog listing. It is also illustrated in Milgram Campaign book (p. 3) (Image)

EXTREMELY FINE. A MAGNIFICENT COVER WITH A TIED EXAMPLE OF THE BOUTON'S STAMP PORTRAYING PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE ZACHARY TAYLOR WITH THE "ROUGH & READY" POLITICAL CAMPAIGN SLOGAN.
The condition of this cover is unsurpassed and, in our opinion, superior to the two ex-Caspary and Middendorf tied examples, by virtue of the stamp's quality and placement. The "Rough and Ready" stamp, with a portrait of then-presidential candidate Zachary Taylor was issued by Bouton at a time when the first U.S. regular issue stamps were only one year old. Bouton's mixture of politics and postage put him far ahead of his time. A wonderful piece of philatelic Americana.
Ex Malcolm. This was in the David L. Jarrett U.S. Postal History collection sold by Christie's in 1990 and was reacquired by Mr. Jarrett in our Sale 773 in 1996. (Image)
