USE OF THE POST OFFICE BUSINESS FRPost Office Business/Free. In circle boldly struck with "Richmond Va. Nov. 29" (1864) circular datestamp on 3c Red Star Die entire to postmaster at Halesford Va., very fresh

EXTREMELY FINE. THE ONLY RECORDED USE OF THE "POST OFFICE BUSINESS FREE" MARKING AT RICHMOND. BELIEVED TO BE A PROVISIONAL IMPRINT IN THE ABSENCE OF PRE-PRINTED OFFICIAL ENTIRES.

The circular "Post Office Business/Free" handstamp is rare in any form. However, this example represents the only known use of the marking as a form of provisional imprint. Pre-printed official business entires were normally used by the Post office Department at Richmond, but this handstamped entire was made in November 1864 -- the year is determined by the type of circular town datestamp (large serifed letters, month and day, no year slug).

Ex Dietz (signed), Emerson and Powell. With 1973 P.F. certificate (Image)
