N.Y. 1 Jul. 7-AM 1924" machine cancel on to Reno Nev., purple "Via Air Mail, On first trip of through schedule involving night flying on Trans-continental Air Mail Route" boxed handstamp, receiving backstamp of July 2

VERY FINE. AN EXCEEDINGLY RARE EXAMPLE OF THE 1918 24-CENT AIR POST GROUNDED PLANE VARIETY ON COVER.

According to a 1956 article in Aero Philatelist Annals, one sheet of the Grounded Plane variety was part of the stock of the Nassau Stamp Company. Apparently, the company had difficulty selling the variety and decided to use some on the first transcontinental night flight. Only a few are known used on these covers. (Image)
