1861-66 Issue
Lot Sym. Lot Description
37   10c Dark Green, First Design (62B).> Choice centering with wide and even margins, deep rich color and proof-like impression beautifully complemented by <red> New York circular datestamp, long and full
perforations all around<><>^EXTREMELY FINE GEM.10c Dark Green, First Design (62B). Choice centering with wide and even margins, deep rich color and proof-like impression beautifully complemented by red New York circular datestamp, long and full perforations all around

EXTREMELY FINE GEM. A SUPERB USED EXAMPLE OF THE FIRST DESIGN 10-CENT 1861 ISSUE. AN EXTREMELY DIFFICULT STAMP TO FIND IN SUCH PRISTINE CONDITION. ESPECIALLY DESIRABLE WITH THE RED CANCEL.

The 10c 1861 "First Design" (or Type I from Plate 4) is extremely difficult to find in well-centered and sound condition. This is partly due to the narrow spacing on Plate 4, which was used for the earliest printing. This stamp is nearly the equal of the 10c Type I in our Sale 953 (lot 299), which realized $25,000 hammer.

Ex Zoellner. With 1992 and 2006 P.F. certificates (Image)

visible<><>^EXTREMELY FINE GEM. A SUPERB5c Brown Yellow (67a). Fresh color in an unusually bright shade, choice centering with perforations clear of design on all sides, neat strike of red town circular datestamp at right leaves design clearly visible

EXTREMELY FINE GEM. A SUPERB USED EXAMPLE OF THE 5-CENT 1861 ISSUE IN THE BROWN YELLOW COLOR.

Due to narrow spacing on the 5c plate, it is very difficult to find centered copies with the perforations clear of the design on all sides. The stamp offered here, with choice centering and the red town cancellation, should be considered a condition rarity.
