Horizontal pair, large margins with outer frameline at left, cancelled by scarce brownish "GRAMPARA" framed handstamp with manuscript "15 de Debr. 1843" date on the pair (as usual for this town), not tied but evidently used on folded cover to Maranhao, endorsed "p. VERY FINE. AN EXTREMELY RARE BULL'S EYE FRANKING FOR 240-REIS SHIP POSTAGE.

The postage on letters travelling by ship was rated at 120-reis up to one-half ounce plus an additional 60-reis for each quarter-ounce increment. This letter must have weighed between -3/4 and 1 ounce. Although contrary to regulations, stamps on ship letters are sometimes found uncancelled. (Image)
