Exhibited under the title "USA Domestic Rates 1792-1863", comprising 181 covers written up on pages in four three-ring binders, starts with 1796 "SALEM" straightline, includes other straightlines from Hartford, New York, Baltimore, Alexandria, Providence, circles introduced around 1799, some unusual rates incl. way, 1815 War Rates incl. rare "9" in circle on incoming Philadelphia ship letter (6c plus 50%), restored rates, some unusual town markings incl. Lambertville negative circle (stained cover), Augusta "Horn of Plenty", usages begin to diversify around 1820's incl. "Mail Route", "Forwarded", 1836 Express Mail, Hale & Co., "Steam", Martin Van Buren free frank, ship letters, "Rail Road Car" straightline (a gorgeous strike and cover), July 1, 1845 first day followed by nice range of 1845-1863 usages incl. "Housatonic Railroad 5", hotel markings, local posts, trans-continental rates, name-of-boat steamboat packet, a cover to President James K. Polk, Mexican War, and ending with Sanitary Commission stampless soldiers' letters, condition is generally Very Fine, we have removed only a handful of better covers as individual lots, leaving the core study collection intact and ready for expansion by an equally knowledgeable collector/exhibitor (or liquidation by an eBay or mail-order dealer) E. 5,000-7,500
