Cover bearing Great Britain, 1865-67, 4p Vermilion, 6p Red Violet (43, 51, SG 94, 97), 4p wing margin at right, tied by "B01" in barred oval handstamps of Alexandria, to Customs House in New York, neat "Cairo JA 20, 1871" circular datestamp, endorsed "Via Brindisi" and with red "2 Cents" credit handstamp to the U.S., indistinct red New York receiving datestamp, with original contents datelined "Horusko, Nubia/100 miles above Cataract, January 1st 1871", interesting contents incl. "Part of the last day was very exciting, more than 200 men were tugging at four long ropes & slowly dragging the boat up the last and greatest descent of water...several times she got on the rocks, once the water rushed in thru the hole for the rudder post", missing part of top flap, minor cover wear, Very Fine, attractive and fascinating usage which must have been hand-carried from the expedition to enter the mails in Cairo (Image) E. 400-500
