VERY FINE. AN EXTREMELY RARE USE OF THE 10-CENT 1855 ISSUE ON A COVER TO BRITISH GUIANA.
10c rate covers from the United States to the British West Indies were usually carried by American Packet via Kingston or Havana. This letter was carried by the steamer Tennessee from New York to the St. Thomas, where it entered the British Post Office. From St. Thomas it was carried on a Royal Mail feeder line packet to Demerara. The Tennessee was owned by Messrs. S. de Agreda, Jove & Co. It made only six trips on the New York-St. Thomas-Puerto Rico route from January to August 1856. It was sold to the Nicaragua Transit Company in September 1856 (source: United States Incoming Steamship Mail 1847-1875, Theron J. Wierenga, pp. 387-388) (Image)
