Red (9, 11). Large margins to in, tied by "Savannah Ga. 3 Mar. 25"
circular datestamp on buff cover to Norton Mass., well-struck "MAIL
ROUTE" straightline handstamp, endorsed "Pr. N. York Steamer",
1c tiny corner crease, some slight edgewear VERY FINE. AN OUTSTANDING
1851 ISSUE COVER WITH THE RARE SAVANNAH "MAIL ROUTE" STRAIGHTLINE AND A
ONE-CENT PLUS THREE-CENT COMBINATION. The rare "Mail Route" marking
was applied to mail picked up by contract mail steamers near Savannah and
was used instead of a "Way" marking (Simpson-Alexander rarity 9). The
combination of this marking and a 1c plus 3c franking is ideal. (Image) |

Va., first page is bill of lading, second is letter, vertical file fold
well clear of stamp, Very Fine, carried on the freighter Landonia
from Richmond to Lynchburg via the James River and Kanawha Canal where
struck with the obsolete "Way 6" handstamp
