EXTREMELY FINE GEM. THIS IS PROBABLY THE FINEST MINT NEVER-HINGED PLATE BLOCK OF THE 50-CENT 1909 DOUBLE-LINE WATERMARKED WASHINGTON ISSUE IN EXISTENCE. A REMARKABLE SHOWPIECE.

Scott 341 was produced from only one plate, No. 4956. It produced plate blocks at top and bottom. A search of past auction catalogues has failed to find an equal to the plate block offered here.

Ex Silver Lake. Undercatalogued in Scott -- they assign a 228% premium for Mint N.H. singles versus hinged, but only assign a 178% premium for a Mint N.H. plate block versus the hinged despite its far greater rarity. Applying the same premium would result in a catalogue value of $16,000.00 and still would not fully account for the rarity of this plate block in relation to catalogue value for singles (Image)

7,000.00

SOLD for $18,500.00
Will close during Public Auction
50 ogbl image$1.00 Violet Brown (342). Top imprint and plate no. 4957 block of six, lightly hinged in selvage only, stamps Mint N.H., rich color, perfectly centered, one toned perf tip, sealed selvage tear just above imprint

EXTREMELY FINE APPEARANCE. A BEAUTIFUL PLATE NUMBER BLOCK OF THE $1.00 WASHINGTON.

Excluding the Bluish Paper issue, this is one of the rarest of the Washington-Franklin plate blocks. The Bureau experienced difficulty with paper shrinkage while printing the 1908 Issue, and the Bluish Paper experiment of 1909 was part of an effort to correct the problem. The 1908 high-denomination stamps are difficult to find well-centered, and plate blocks are extremely rare in higher grades.

Ex Wampler. (Image)
