876 c imageRobert E. Lee. Clear signature "R. E. Lee Genl" at top right of yellow cover addressed in his hand to "Mrs. Robert Ransom, Dellwood, near Petersburg, Virginia", the cover also bears a 10c Greenish Blue, Die A (11c), huge margins all around, ms. "X" cancel, matching "Madison Run Sta. Va. Dec. 6" (1863) postmark, stamp has a tiny pre-use tear in lower left margin

EXTREMELY FINE. A REMARKABLY FRESH AND CHOICE EXAMPLE OF GENERAL LEE'S SIGNATURE IN COMBINATION WITH A CONFEDERATE GENERAL ISSUE STAMP.

Robert E. Lee's letters sent from the field were enclosed in envelopes signed "R. E. Lee Genl". The letters and other important papers were carried by military courier, usually to Richmond, where they were either mailed or delivered by hand. Letters were also stamped and mailed at post offices near Lee's location, as in this case. The addressee was the wife of General Robert Ransom.

879 c imageJames L. Orr. Free frank "James L. Orr CSS" on turned cover to Abbeville S.C., bold "Richmond Va. May 6" and "Due 10" handstamps, inside addressed to Abbeville and with "Paid 10" handstamp, pencil drawing of bird on one side flap, some toning spots, still Fine, the frank was not accepted in lieu of postage and so was charged 10c due, the sender was one of three Confederate commissioners to visit Washington for the surrender of U.S. forts in Charleston harbor, after the war he became Governor of South Carolina (Image) E. 100-150

Red and blue letterhead with 2 page contents datelined Hempstead, Feb. 7, 1861, mostly business matters though it refers to Texas secession and ends: "A company went from this place to the frontier to stop the Indian depradations I reckon they have cleared them all out as we have heard nothing of 'Injins' since." Very Fine, the only recorded example of this patriotic letterhead, the matching patriotic cover is illustrated in Confederate Patriotic Covers and Their Usages (Image) E. 750-1,000
