The Thurston Twigg-Smith Collection of Hawaiian Stamps and Postal History continued...

1864-91 Royal Portrait Issues Used with U.S. Stamps
Lot Sym. Lot Description
4152° c image1864, 2c Rose Vermilion (31). Pair and single, tied by 3-ring target on small cover to San Francisco ca. 1865-66, with United States 1863 5c Brown (76) tied by red "Honolulu U.S. Postage Paid May 11" circular datestamp, also tied by "San Francisco Cal. Jun. 6" double-circle datestamp and target, stamps folded over at top edge, cover slightly reduced at left, just into rim of Honolulu datestamp

FINE. A RARE AND STRIKING MIXED FRANKING ON COVER FROM HAWAII TO SAN FRANCISCO.

As evidenced by this and other mixed-franking covers from the Tillman correspondence, there was a willingness on the part of the sender to overpay postage. This cover shows 1c overpayment of the 5c Hawaiian postage and 1c overpayment of the combined 2c drop-letter rate and 2c ship fee for a prepaid letter addressed to the port of entry.

4154° c image1866, 5c Blue (32). Two, each with matching bold pen stroke cancel, used with United States 1861 3c Rose (65) and 1863 5c Brown (76), each cancelled by rim of target on double-rate cover to Derry N.H., bold red "Honolulu U.S. Postage Paid Dec. 10" (1866) circular datestamp and "San Francisco Cal. Jan. 10" double-circle datestamp, sender's route instructions "By Steamer from S.F.", Feb. 1, 1867 receipt docketing along left edge, left No. 32 torn, minor edge faults

FINE APPEARANCE. AN EXTREMELY RARE AND UNUSUAL HAWAIIAN AND UNITED STATES MIXED FRANKING.

This cover dates from what Gregory calls the Fifth Sub-Period of the Late Treaty Period. It was evidently a double-rate letter, with the double 5c Hawaiian postage correctly prepaid, but the U.S. postage was underpaid at 8c. Perhaps during this period of confusion it was believed that the double rate only applied to the 3c U.S. domestic postage (2 x 3c plus 2c ship fee).

4155° c image1866, 5c Blue (32). Hawaiian-Islands Jan. 3" originating circular datestamp (Ty. 242.13) on back, equally sharp red "Honolulu U.S. Postage Paid Jan. 20" circular datestamp also ties 10c stamp, mostly readable strike of red "Hawaiian Steam Service" double-line oval handstamp, some light stains evident in photos from past "name" sale catalogues have been skillfully removed, a few minor perf faults

VERY FINE APPEARANCE. A SPECTACULAR DOUBLE-RATE MIXED-FRANKING WITH THE "HAWAIIAN STEAM SERVICE" OVAL, APPLIED BY THE SAN FRANCISCO POST OFFICE TO CONTRACT STEAMSHIP MAIL FROM HAWAII.

According to www.hawaiianstamps.com, the "Hawaiian Steam Service" oval was applied regularly to contract letters from November 1867 to August 1869 (there is one recorded later, irregular use of the marking). This cover was carried on the COMSS Idaho, departing Honolulu on Jan. 20, 1868, and arriving in San Francisco on Feb. 2.
