EXTREMELY FINE. ONE OF THE FINEST OF ALL THIRD AVENUE POST OFFICE COVERS. ONE OF TWO RECORDED 139L4 STAMPS -- THIS IS THE ONLY EXAMPLE KNOWN ON COVER.

The Sloane records show a 139L4 on piece with a 3c 1851, both stamps tied by a "New-York Apr. 15" circular datestamp.

EXTREMELY FINE APPEARANCE. ONLY THREE OR FOUR THIRD AVENUE POST STAMPS ARE REPORTED ON BUFF PAPER.

This stamp and one other (offered in the Golden sale, lot 1549, realized $2,100 hammer) are the only two confirmed examples of the Buff 139L6 stamp. A cover in the Caspary sale was described with a "Yellow Buff" stamp, but we are unable at this time to determine if it is actually Buff 139L6 or Yellow 139L3. There was also a stamp on cover in the Needham collection that was described as Buff 139L6 in the Harmer, Rooke & Co. sale, Mar. 6-7, 1951.

VERY FINE APPEARANCE. ONE OF THREE RECORDED THIRD AVENUE POST STAMPS ON PINK PAPER.

The Third Avenue Post Office was operated by S. Rothenheim in 1855 and 1856. Rothenheim was at one time a carrier for Boyd's post. The three recorded examples are as follows: 1) cut to shape, the stamp offered here, ex Golden (Siegel Sale 817, lot 1550, realized $4,750 hammer), 2) uncancelled on cover to Dobbs Ferry N.Y., ex Hall (Siegel Sale 830, lot 785, realized $6,000 hammer), and 3) uncancelled on cover to Nevada City Cal. with certificate stating stamp does not originate (we disagree), Siegel Sale 846 (realized $2,600 hammer).
