VERY FINE. A RARE INBOUND BLOCKADE-RUN USAGE TO CHARLESTON, WHICH WAS FORWARDED TO SPARTANBURG WITH A CONFEDERATE GENERAL ISSUE.
The recipient, J. Berkley Grimball (according to his diary, available at http://www. lib.unc.edu/mss/inv/g/Grimball,John_Berkley), came from a prominent Southern family. His wife was a direct descendant of Lewis Morris, a signer of the Declaration of Independence. At the onset of the war, his five eldest sons went off to fight for the Confederacy. In June 1862, Grimball, his wife, son Harry and three daughters went to Spartanburg in an effort to avoid enemy attacks on the coast. There they took quarters in St. John's College, where they remained until the war was over. Grimball made frequent trips home during this time, both to look after his property and to report for possible duty in the reserves. (Image)
