Straightline handstamp on folded letter datelined "New Orleans 7th April
1804" and addressed to New York, ms. "25" rate, docketing on back reads
"Brig. 'Venus', Carr, New Orleans to New York", letter requests
insurance on shipment of 28 hogsheads of sugar to New York, light vertical
file folds VERY FINE. A CHOICE EXAMPLE OF THIS RARE NEW ORLEANS
PRE-TERRITORIAL POSTMARK AND A MARVELOUS PIECE OF EARLY NEW ORLEANS
HISTORY. This was sent during the brief pre-territorial period, which
existed from Dec. 20, 1803 to Sep. 30, 1804, before being incorporated as
the District of Louisiana (to the north) and Orleans Territory (to the
