Dec. 8" circular datestamp on small cover to Joyeuse, France, red "New York Paid 6 Dec. 18" credit datestamp (inverted month), red boxed "PD" handstamp, Calais transit (Dec. 29, 1869) and French receiving backstamps, backflap removed, small mended nick at top center, otherwise Very Fine, extremely rare use of 1869 Pictorial high-value from a small California mining town (P.O. open 1864-86), according to Wikipedia: "Camanche was a settlement in Calaveras County, California. Once called Limerick, the town became Camanche (after Camanche, Iowa) in 1849. Gold mining at nearby Cat Camp, Poverty Bar, and Sand Hill brought its population to a peak of 1,500. Mokelumne River water was brought in by Lancha Plana and Poverty Bar Ditch. A fire on June 21, 1873 destroyed Camanche's large Chinatown." (Image) E. 1,000-1,500
