Worldwide Stamps and Postal History continued...

Mauritius thru New Britain
Lot Sym. Lot Description
1369 og ImageMAURITIUS, 1848, 2p Dark Blue on Grayish Paper, Earliest Impression (4; SG 5). Position 6, unused (without gum), large to full margins including sheet at right, excellent color and intense impression indicative of the Earliest Impressions, small portion of design and margin added at bottom

VERY FINE APPEARANCE. AN IMMENSELY RARE UNUSED EXAMPLE OF THE 2-PENCE DARK BLUE "POST PAID" FROM THE EARLIEST IMPRESSION. ONE OF THE MOST DISTINCTIVE AND ICONIC BRITISH COMMONWEALTH RARITIES.

While postal services in Mauritius date back to 1770s, it wasn't until 1846 that inland mail service was organized. Joseph Osmond Barnard, a local printer and engraver, was contracted to produce two stamps. He engraved both stamps on a single plate with the inscriptions "Post Office". It is believed 500 were printed and were sold out almost immediately. For second printing, from which the example offered here came, were engraved directly onto two copper plates of twelve (four rows of three), one for each value with the inscription "Post Paid". The plates wore away relatively quickly, and so only a very limited number of impressions qualify as the earliest.

Position 7, mostly huge margins to full at right, relatively light barred circle and target cancels, mostly face-free with the error "PENOE" easily seen, small thins in top margin and bottom right with small thin and crease

VERY FINE APPEARING USED EXAMPLE OF THE RARE 2-PENCE BLUE "PENOE" ERROR FROM THE EARLIEST IMPRESSION. A RARE BRITISH COMMONWEATLH ERROR FROM THIS ICONIC ISSUE OCCURING ONLY ONCE ON A PLATE.

The "Post Paid" examples were engraved directly onto two copper plates of twelve (four rows of three), one for each value. Position 7 (R. 3/1) contained the most pronounced error variety of "PENOE" for "PENCE". The plates wore away relatively quickly, and so only a very limited number of impressions qualify as the earliest.
