Well-struck red oval handstamp on prepaid registered folded cover dated Feb. 4, 1839 from Panama to General Mosquera in Bogota, manuscript markings along edges indicating registration with "Certification Panama, Sale hoi 4 de Feb. 1839, Gonzalez" notation, reverse with explanation of rate - 4 reales postage and 8 reales registration paid

VERY FINE. A REMARKABLE REGISTERED COVER FROM PANAMA. THIS IS THE EARLIEST REGISTERED COVER FROM PANAMA AND THE SOLE EXAMPLE MAILED DURING THE NEW GRANADA PERIOD.

At this time, General Mosquera was Secretary of War. He went on to become the President of Colombia four times (in various forms).
