Regimental Imprint (CN-4, unlisted unit designation), "H.P. Hill & Co" (Griffin Ga.) imprint, stamp is faulty but complete, cover barely reduced at left

AN EXTREMELY RARE EARLY REGIMENTAL CONFEDERATE FLAG AND CANNON PATRIOTIC COVER FROM PENSACOLA, FLORIDA. THE "LADIES' BATTERY, McDUFFIE RIFLES" IMPRINT MAY BE UNIQUE.

This scarce design depicts a cannon that is facing right and not firing, unlike other Cannon designs, that face left and are shown firing. We have sold only a few other examples of this design, each from Pensacola with a regimental imprint. This imprint, which is unlisted in the C.S.A. Catalog, is the only example we have encountered and may well be unique. It originates from McDuffie's Rifles of the the Georgia Regiment. The reference to Ladies' Battery is extremely unusual -- in Georgia the "Ladies' Gunboat" or "Ladies' Ram" was designed to prevent a U.S. naval attack.
