VERY FINE. THE ONLY RECORDED EXAMPLE OF THIS OUTSTANDING VIRGINIA PATRIOTIC DESIGN.

"Sic Semper Tyrannis" means "thus always to tyrants", which John Wilkes Booth yelled out to the audience during the shooting of Lincoln. (Give Me) "Liberty or Death" is of course the famous phrase attributed to Virginian Patrick Henry during the Revolution. All these elements combine to create a striking and unique Patriotic design.

Illustrated in Wishnietsky's Confederate Patriotic Covers and Their Usages on p. 98. Ex Walcott, Judd, Meroni and Matthies, where acquired by the Kilbournes in the 1968 sale of her Confederate Patriotics (Siegel Sale 337, lot 918) (Image)
