The Kilbourne Collection of CSA Stamps and Postal History continued...

10c Blue Lithograph
Lot Sym. Lot Description
640 TC Image10c Black, Hoyer & Ludwig, Trial Color Plate Proof on Wove (2TC5a var). Exceptionally detailed impression from a Hoyer & Ludwig print, dramatically distinct from the few known Black trial color proofs from Stone Y (which are Paterson prints), ample even margins all around, thin spot lower left

VERY FINE APPEARANCE. THE 10-CENT LITHOGRAPH TRIAL COLOR PLATE PROOFS IN BLACK ARE AMONG THE RAREST OF ALL GENERAL ISSUE PROOFS. THIS IS THE ONLY EXAMPLE WE HAVE ENCOUNTERED FROM A HOYER & LUDWIG PRINTING. A KEY TO A COMPREHENSIVE COLLECTION.

The Scott and C.S.A. catalogs list the 10c Black lithograph trial color proof only from Stone Y (Paterson print). This Hoyer & Ludwig print is not listed and is the only example we have encountered. The Stone Y trial colors are extremely rare with fewer than five known. We do not know if there is another example of a trial color proof from the Hoyer & Ludwig stone.

Scott Retail $4,500.00 for the Paterson proof. (Image)
