The Kilbourne Collection of CSA Stamps and Postal History continued...

Patriotics–General Issues continued...
Lot Sym. Lot Description
625 c Image10c Light Blue, Paterson (2a). Large margins except faulty bottom left corner, cancelled by two small pen strokes on yellow cover to Enterprise Miss. with Single Standing Continental Soldier and "We will face the foe upon this field" Verse Patriotic design in ornamental border (SN-3, Verse 49), overall soiling

VERY FINE APPEARANCE. THIS IS THE ONLY EXAMPLE OF THIS SINGLE SOLDIER WITH VERSE IN ORNAMENTAL FRAME PATRIOTIC WE HAVE ENCOUNTERED. A RARITY MADE MORE DESIRABLE BY THE 10-CENT BLUE LITHOGRAPH.

The only other example we have offered with this style of standing soldier was in our sale of the Dr. Brandon collection (Siegel Sale 1087, lot 195). That example has a slightly smaller soldier, without the ornamental frame and has a different verse (we incorrectly described it as SN-2).

626 c Image5c Blue, Stone 2 (4). With bottom sheet margin, manuscript "X" cancel, no town postmark but originates in Clayton N.C. (based on the other, nearly identical example), on oatmeal cover to Moffitt's Mills N.C. with Single Standing Soldier and Verse Patriotic design (SN-2, Verse 34), the uniform in the style of the 1820's, W. & J. Bonitz, Goldsboro N.C, small cover nick behind top of stamp

FINE AND EXTREMELY RARE. BELIEVED TO BE ONE OF ONLY TWO KNOWN EXAMPLES OF THIS SINGLE SOLDIER PATRIOTIC DESIGN.

Both of the reported examples of this design are franked with the 5c Blue Lithograph, affixed in the same orientation, with "X" cancels and to the same addressee. The other example, last offered in Siegel Sale 619 (lot 93), has a manuscript "Clayton N.C. Apr. 18" postmark and is ex Weatherly and Everett. Another example which we identified as SN-2 in our 2014 sale of the Dr. Brandon collection is actually SN-3.

VERY FINE. A BEAUTIFUL EXAMPLE OF THE 5-CENT BLUE LITHOGRAPH USED TO PAY THE PRE-JULY 1, 1862 RATE ON A SMALL GENERAL BEAUREGARD PATRIOTIC COVER -- A LOVELY "BLUE ON BLUE" COMBINATION AND ONE OF ONLY TWO RECORDED EXAMPLES IN BLUE.

The C.S.A. Catalog states that only one example of the Beauregard design is known in blue. We are aware of one other which is a stampless cover with postage due.
