FINE. A VERY EARLY REGISTERED LETTER FROM INDIA TO AN OVERSEAS DESTINATION.

According to Martin & Blair's Overseas Letter Postage from India, 1854-1876, the four anna rate for registered letters to the United Kingdom began on July 1, 1857 and had to be paid in cash. This cover predates that noted in Martin & Blair. The strip of 1a stamps paid the After Packet fee from Calcutta to Kedgree. The 4-anna registration free was paid in cash. Also this letter is from the India Mutiny period. (Image)
