FINE. A VERY RARE USE FROM COCHIN TO FRANCE.
Uses of the 1854 Issue from the Feudatory State of Cochin are rare. The 1a pair paid the inland postage to Madras. (Image)
FINE. A VERY EARLY REGISTERED LETTER FROM INDIA TO AN OVERSEAS DESTINATION.
According to Martin & Blair's Overseas Letter Postage from India, 1854-1876, the four anna rate for registered letters to the United Kingdom began on July 1, 1857 and had to be paid in cash. This cover predates that noted in Martin & Blair. The strip of 1a stamps paid the After Packet fee from Calcutta to Kedgree. The 4-anna registration free was paid in cash. Also this letter is from the India Mutiny period. (Image)
