VERY FINE. A RARE BOULES DE MOULINS COVER, SENT INTO PARIS DURING THE SEIGE. THIS IS IN BETTER CONDITION THAN NORMALLY SEEN, AS MANY SUFFERED WATER DAMAGE.

During the Siege of Paris it was virtually impossible to get mail into the city. Balloons (Ballons Montes) and Pigeon Post were used for outgoing mail. Boules de Moulins were an attempt to bring mail into Paris, using semi-floating balls of zinc sent down the Seine and carried by the current. The service started Jan. 4, 1871 and was discontinued Jan. 31. None actually reached Paris during the Siege, they were found later, some as recently as 1982. (Image)
