2012 Rarities of the World continued...

1869 Pictorial Issue and Re-Issue, Stamps and Inverts continued...
Lot Sym. Lot Description
150°   Image30c Ultramarine & Carmine, Center Inverted (121b). Choice centering with wide-spaced margins, incredibly rich and bright colors on fresh white paper, clear strike of circle of eight wedges cancel and part of red foreign transit handstamp at lower left

VERY FINE AND CHOICE. A RARE SOUND EXAMPLE OF THE 30-CENT 1869 PICTORIAL INVERT WITH WIDE-SPACED TOP AND BOTTOM MARGINS AND PART OF A RED FOREIGN TRANSIT MARKING.

Our recently updated census of the 30c 1869 Invert, available at http://www.siegelauctions.com/dynamic/census/121b/121b.pdf , contains a total of 46 stamps, including 7 unused and 39 used. The stamp offered here is one of five in the Wide-Spaced centering category (see Chronicle No. 138, May 1988, page 123). The Wide-Spaced stamps have extra wide top and bottom margins. Three of the five Wide-Spaced stamps are centered slightly to left, as is this copy.

Census No. 121b-CAN-WS04. Ex Hansen. 1978 and 2005 P.F. certificates no longer accompany. With 2012 P.S.E. certificate (F 70, SMQ $92,000.00). Only two have graded higher to date and only one other shares this grade. That said, this Wide-Spaced stamp with rich colors deserves a higher grade in our opinion (VF 80) (Image)

153 ng Image15c Brown & Blue, Re-Issue, Imperforate Horizontally (129a). Unused (no gum), fresh colors and sharp impressions, choice centering with even margins at top and bottom, tiny thin spot at right

EXTREMELY FINE APPEARING EXAMPLE OF THE 15-CENT 1869 RE-ISSUE IMPERFORATE HORIZONTALLY.

Jonathan W. Rose, in his book United States Postage Stamps of 1869, estimates that no more than five to ten copies of this error exist (our own estimate is 20-30, two are known used). Only one sheet of 100 was issued, and all were cut into singles by a clerk in the Third Assistant Postmaster General's office. It is not known how many were sold.

With 1993 P.F. certificate (Image)
