Mail." double-circle handstamp (Ty. 759, Rarity 1RRRR) with second strike at left, red "Honolulu Hawaii Feb. 1" (1884) circular datestamp on cover to San Francisco, receipt docketing on back, stamps with slight gum toning on perfs, otherwise Very Fine, a spectacular strike of this scarce marking, which was used to indicate payment of the extra fee for a letter that was brought to the Honolulu Post Office after the posted closing time for a mail shipment -- similar to U.S. Supplementary Mail, Gregory lists date range of use from Jul. 2, 1882, to Oct. 1, 1884 (Image)

Five 5c singles and pair of 10c tied by target cancels, magenta "Honolulu Hawaii Feb. 13, 1890" double-circle datestamp on registered cover to New York, Honolulu "R" registry handstamp, San Francisco registry datetamp, red "Suspected Liable United States Customs Duties" handstamp, letter was refused by addressee and sent to the Dead Letter Office, variety of related markings incl. "Unclaimed", "2nd Notice", N.Y. "Refused" label, "D.L.O" boxed handstamp and "Dead Letter Office" oval, cover returned to Hawaii and received with May 30 Honolulu double-circle datestamp, opened for display, stamp selvage on back, one 5c stamp defective and couple other small stamp flaws, overall wear and edge nicks which is unsurprising considering its extensive journey and handling, undoubtedly this contained Hawaiian stamps and was stopped at U.S. Customs (Image)
