VERY FINE. A COLORFUL AND EXTREMELY RARE MIXED FRANKING WITH THE 1866 5-CENT KAMEHAMEHA V AND UNITED STATES 3-CENT 1861 AND 2-CENT BLACK JACK.

Very few U.S.-Hawaiian mixed-franking covers with the 2c Black Jack are known. This is a late treaty period usage, as the 5c/10c contract steamer rates became effective September 25, 1867. This cover was carried on the British bark Australind, which departed Honolulu on April 20, 1867, and arrived at San Francisco on May 9. (Image)

FINE AND RARE. A VERY UNUSUAL MIXED-FRANKING COMBINATION FOR THE CONTRACT STEAMER RATE TO SAN FRANCISCO.

During the contract steamer period, mail addressed to the U.S. was charged 5c Hawaiian and 10c U.S. postage, regardless of destination. As such, lower rates to San Francisco no longer applied. According to www.hawaiianstamps.com, the "Hawaiian Steam Service" oval was applied regularly to contract letters from November 1867 to August 1869. This cover was carried on the COMSS Idaho, departing Honolulu on May 9, 1868, and arriving in San Francisco on May 22. Mail from this sailing was datestamped in San Francisco on May 22 and 23.

According to www.hawaiianstamps.com, the "Hawaiian Steam Service" oval was applied regularly to contract letters from November 1867 to August 1869. This cover was carried on the COMSS Idaho, departing Honolulu on Apr. 3, 1868, and arriving in San Francisco on Apr. 15. Mail from this sailing was datestamped in San Francisco on April 15, 16 and 17.

May 23" circular datestamp on cover to Robert T. Coan in Lyndenville N.Y., originated in Hilo with "Hilo P.O. Hawaiian-Islands Apr. 29" circular datestamp on back, brownish red "Hawaiian Steam Service" oval handstamp, June 10 receipt docketing at top, cover with edgewear and small tears, still Fine, an interesting and unusual use, apparently franked to pay the 5c/10c contract steamer single rate but entirely with Hawaiian stamps, there is a small manuscript "10" below the strip, possibly written in Hilo to indicate the U.S. postage that needed to be applied to the cover, but we see no evidence that any additional stamps were ever present, the Honolulu circular datestamp was used to indicate full prepayment and the cover was accepted as prepaid in San Francisco, carried on the COMSS Idaho, departing Honolulu on May 9, 1868, and arriving in San Francisco on May 22 (Image)

The docketing at bottom left indicates the cover carried photographs, which explains why it weighed more than one-half ounce. Only ten examples of the "Hawaiian Steam Service" handstamp are recorded on multiple-rate covers. According to www.hawaiianstamps.com, the "Hawaiian Steam Service" oval was applied regularly to contract letters from November 1867 to August 1869. This cover was carried on the COMSS Idaho, departing Honolulu on May 9, 1868, and arriving in San Francisco on May 22.

VERY FINE. A BEAUTIFUL AND RARE MIXED-FRANKING COVER BEARING THE HAWAIIAN 5-CENT KAMEHAMEHA V AND UNITED STATES 5-CENT 1863 ISSUES, WHICH ORIGINATED IN MICRONESIA AND WAS SENT THROUGH HONOLULU AND SAN FRANCISCO.

This cover comes from the correspondence of Reverend Albert A. Sturges, one of the first missionaries to travel to Micronesia in the 1850's. According to the docketing, this cover arrived in Honolulu on December 6 (the British brig Robert Cowan arrived on Dec. 5). It was postmarked on Dec. 26 on the day it left on the COMSS Idaho, arriving in San Francisco on Jan. 8, 1869. Mail from this sailing was datestamped in San Francisco on Jan. 9.

VERY FINE. A SPECTACULAR MIXED-FRANKING COVER WITH THE 1866 5-CENT KAMEHAMEHA V AND UNITED STATES 10-CENT 1869 PICTORIAL ISSUE. ONLY NINE COVERS BEARING A 10-CENT 1869 STAMP ARE RECORDED USED FROM HAWAII.

Michael Laurence, in his outstanding book on the 10c 1869 Issue, records only nine covers from Hawaii, all mixed frankings. This cover was carried on the COMSS Idaho on the third to last sailing of the contract steamer period, departing Honolulu on Apr. 21, 1870, and arriving at San Francisco on May 5.
