571° c Image1861, 2c Pale Rose, Vertically Laid (28). Bright color, ample to large margins, tied by bold square grid cancel, "Honolulu Hawaiian-Islands Jul. 6" circular datestamp on 13-Star United States Flag patriotic cover to Hilo, cover with back flap tears and minor soiling

EXTREMELY FINE. A SPECTACULAR AND RARE USE OF THE 2-CENT 1861 KAMEHAMEHA IV ISSUE ON A PATRIOTIC COVER FROM THE COAN CORRESPONDENCE.

While many patriotic covers are known used from Hawaii during the Spanish-American War period, Civil War era patriotics used from or within Hawaii are extremely rare. Our records contain just five examples as follows: 1) Eagle and Shield patriotic cover franked with 1c and 10c U.S. 1857 Issue stamps and 5c Hawaii No. 8, postmarked 1861, the earliest usage and the only mixed franking, ex Honolulu Advertiser, 2) the same Eagle and Shield design franked with a U.S. 12c 1861 Issue, postmarked Feb. 12, 1862, from our 1969 Rarities of the World Sale, ex Vogel, 3) Standing Liberty red and blue patriotic cover franked with a U.S. 12c 1861 Issue, postmarked at Honolulu on April 18, 1863, 4) 13-Star Flag patriotic cover franked with Hawaii No. 28, postmarked Jul. 6, 186?, the cover offered here, 5) inter-island cover similar to no. 4, date unknown. Other examples, if any, must be extremely few.

With 1970 P.F. certificate (Image)

574° ogbl Image1863, 2c Carmine Rose, Vertically Laid (28a). Block of ten with top sheet margin, large margins other sides except just in at bottom right, original gum, disturbed on top center stamp from hinge removal, light corner crease at top right, thin speck in one, couple light toned spots confined mostly to back

VERY FINE APPEARANCE. A CHOICE AND EXTREMELY RARE ORIGINAL-GUM BLOCK OF TEN OF THE 1863 2-CENT CARMINE ROSE. THIS IS THE LARGEST KNOWN MULTIPLE.

When this block was sold in the 1957 Caspary sale it was described as one of only three known, though we record only this block and the left sheet margin block that is ex Tows, Harris and Honolulu Advertiser. Sometime between 1957 and the 1967 Lilly sale, the left margin of this block was trimmed slightly to make it straighter.

Ex Caspary and Lilly. Scott Retail as two blocks of four and two singles (Image)
