58° c Image"Honolulu, Oahu, Sandwich Islands, February 21st 1849". Dateline on blue folded letter to Fredericton, New Brunswick, lengthy three-page letter from Collin J. Allan to his brothers, sender's directive "By the favor of E. H. Boardman Esq." at lower left, red "Boston 10cts. 27 Aug." integral-rate circular datestamp and matching "Paid" handstamp, red STEAM-BOAT straightline handstamp, pencil "10" rate and "ST. JOHN N.B./SHIP LETTER" two-line handstamp, St. John (Aug. 29) and Frederickton (Aug. 30) receiving backstamps, manuscript "11-1/2" Canadian due marking, light file folds

VERY FINE. AN EXTREMELY RARE LETTER FROM HAWAII TO A BRITISH NORTH AMERICAN MARITIME PROVINCE VIA BOSTON AND ST. JOHN.

This long and interesting letter was written by Collin Allan, a seaman who decided to quit the whaler Champion when it stopped at Lahaina: "I suppose you have already seen the newspaper accounts of the Gold Diggings in California -- they are not a whit exaggerated. Men who left here without a penny only five months ago have returned with thousands of dollars". The person to whom Colin Allan entrusted his letter, E. H. Boardman, is listed as a California argonaut who left New York on the steamer Panama on Jun. 20, 1849 (http://www.sfgenealogy.com/sf/gnl/argosea1.htm). Boardman probably carried it with him on a whaling vessel's return trip from Honolulu to the East Coast. The "STEAM-BOAT" handstamp indicates that it was sent on a U.S. domestic water route (possibly between New York and Boston) before it was sent by steamer from Boston to St. John.
