2148 c 2c Red Brown, 7c Vermilion (146, 149).> Tied by well-struck <red New York Foreign Mail Geometric> cancel (Weiss GE-EN3) and matching New York Br. Transit Oct. 9 (1872) circular datestamp on folded letter <to
Marseilles, France,> blurry Calais trans2c Red Brown, 7c Vermilion (146, 149). Tied by well-struck red New York Foreign Mail Geometric cancel (Weiss GE-EN3) and matching "New York Br. Transit Oct. 9" (1872) circular datestamp on folded letter to Marseilles, France, blurry Calais transit datestamp (Oct. 22), clear strike of "GB/40c" Anglo-French accountancy and French "5" decimes due handstamps, London (Oct. 21) and Paris receiving backstamps, 7c tiny tear at right, Very Fine strike of this New York Foreign Mail cancel in red and a fascinating cover -- the 9c prepayment appears on this cover two years before the 9c treaty rate went into effect, and the "5" decimes due marking indicates this was a single-rate letter, these factors combined with the use of red ink for the New York Foreign Mail cancel and the amount of postage paid indicate this was treated as Supplementary Mail in New York, requiring twice the British Open Mail 4c rate, the Oct. 9 New York departure and Oct. 21 London transit datestamps mesh nicely with the Guion Line's Manhattan sailing (dep. NY Oct. 9, arr. Queenstown Oct. 20), but it could also have gone on the HAPAG Hammonia II (dep. NY Oct. 10, arr. Plymouth Oct. 21) -- ex Albert, with 2006 P.F. certificate (Image)

"Refused" on back and other notations indicate this was sent back to the D.P.O. in Boston, Very Fine, rare use of this Anglo-French accountancy handstamp, an article by Jeffrey C. Bohn (Chronicle 143, Aug. 1989, p. 112) states "In theory, printed matter sent from the U.S. to France in the British open mails during this period should also have received the "GB/1FPK" accountancy marking previously employed during the first three months of 1857 (Period V above). However, no examples have been reported", this unsealed envelope which must have contained printed matter is such an example (Image)
